I'm a vaguely queer cis white woman from Dublin. I created Trasna and am currently the only blogger. You can contact me via email.
About the blog
Origins and purpose
Trasna was created in November of 2023 to counterbalance the increased prominence of so-called "Gender Critical Feminism" in the mainstream Irish media. It exists to provide a shared online space for Irish trans-inclusive feminism, trans liberation, and queer politics.
I want to provide feminist analysis and perspectives on anti-trans and anti-gender threats to feminism. My ultimate aspiration is that this blog will facilitate increased co-operation between Irish feminists and the Irish trans liberation movement, because I believe this to be both desirable and necessary.
What does "Trasna" mean?
The name of this blog is the Irish language word for "across". "Trasna" is where the tras in trasinscneach, the Irish word for transgender, comes from. But the word trasna also suggests other kinds of crossing over - from the margins to the mainstream, from one country to another, and one from one movement to another and back again.
In fact, I came on the idea of using "trasna" as my blog title after I remembered the primary-school chant "isteach, amach, trasna" - in, out, across. Irish feminists have never been single-issue campaigners, but have crossed between many different political traditions and campaigns - some feminists even joined Fine Gael! The title reflects the pluralistic nature of Irish feminism.
